SATURDAY, MAY 5TH RESULT
JOEY COLSTEN COLLECTS $1,500 MODIFIED SEASON POINT OPENER ON SATURDAY. NEARLY 130 RACE TEAMS JAM THE FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY PIT AREA FOR THE OPENER.
KIRKWOOD, NY…Joey Colsten officially opened the 68th season at Five Mile Point Speedway with a win in the 30 lap Modified feature. For Colsten, the $1,500 victory was his first on opening day and gives him his first ever point lead in the standings. One hundred and twenty-nine race teams flooded the pit area along with a large crowd on hand for the official lid lifter. The quarter mile oval is idle this weekend but roars back to life on Saturday, May 19th with the annual “Pack the Track Night” at the speedway.
ColSten and Rusty Smith led Modified field to the green flag for the 30 lap main event on Saturday. Both drivers have historic racing roots at the speedway. Joey is the son of Southern Tier legend and Dirt Hall of Fame member Mike Colsten. Rusty Smith’s grandfather is one of the original 50 Greatest Driver’s at Five Mile Point Speedway and his father also had a storied asphalt racing career.
The start of the Modified feature got off to a rough start as back to back cautions were thrown before a lap was scored in the record books. The first caution occurred when cars at the front of the field slowed causing a chain reaction tangle on the homestretch. The wreck eliminated last year’s point runner-up Tyler Siri. On the restart Dan Solomon lost the handle in turn 3 collecting Dom Roselli and Barry White. Roselli retired pit side as Solomon and White regrouped at the back of the field.
Things didn’t get much better in the early going as four cautions flew during the first four laps. Once the opening night jitters settled down the racing was excellent. Colsten and Smith put on a great display at the lead of the field as the battled side by side for the race lead for numerous laps. On lap 7 defending track champion Kevin Bates slowed brining out the yellow flag and headed to the pits. Bates did return without losing a lap.
Upfront the great racing between Colsten and Smith continued as several battles among the top drivers occurred. Shaun Walker, Randy Green, Brad Szulewski, Brian Weaver and Nick Rochinski all raced for position up front as the leaders opened up their command on the field. On lap 11 Glenn Knapp wound up spun in turn two and retired for the night. The action throughout the field was intense as the competition this season is like no other year in recent memory. Colsten continued his fast lap times and Smith tried to maintain his second slot.
On lap 17 Smith made a strong low side bid for the race lead as Colsten ran his line in the middle of the speedway. On the next circuit the yellow flew twice with Colsten just edging out Smith to maintain his race lead. The second yellow came on the restart when fourth place runner Green had electrical issues causing his motor to shut down. This triggered a multi-car tangle that ended the night for Green, Weaver, Brian Puckett and Mike Colsten.
On the restart the shape of the race took a different look. Walker got a great restart and darted past Smith for second place as the large crowd expected the two-time Modified champion to make a bid for the lead. Colsten was up to the challenge as Walker got close over the remaining ten laps but could never make a serious bid for the race lead. Colsten went on for his first opening day victory at the speedway. Walker made it known that he is back to contend for his third title with the runner-up finish. Smith ended up third with Szulewski (2016 Summer Slam Champion) followed by Rochinski (last year’s Summer Slam Champion). Mike Butler quietly advanced from his fifteenth starting spot to finish sixth. Brian Malcolm rallied from the lap 1 caution that found him restarting twenty-third to finish seventh. Bates charged late after pitting to finish eighth. Tyler Boniface looked strong with his ninth place finish and Barry White also had a strong comeback from the earlier race caution to finish tenth.
Tommy Collins needed all twenty laps to record his third consecutive Crate Sportsman victory on Saturday night in a wild finish. Tanner Harpell and Brad Cicio started on the front row of the twenty lapper. Harpell charged out to the race lead at the drop of the green. Todd Titus immediately took second place at the green as Collins began chase. Collins wasted no time in taking over the second slot on lap 2 from Titus as the battle for the lead immediately commenced. The caution flew on lap 10 for the final time. Cicio had driveline problems throughout the race and went to the pits during this caution. Harpell and Collins continued to set the pace out front. Both were running the low side of the speedway lap after lap. Harpell kept his lead and was able to lock the car down in turns three and four.
In turns one and two he left enough room for Collins to make multiple bids for the race lead. Harpell was up to the challenge as he continued to set the pace. On lap 19 Harpell again left a half of lane open in turn one and Collins went for the lead. Collins made contact with the race leader and eventually took the lead as Pat Jordan charged to try and pass both. The contact between the leaders slowed their momentum and Jordan may have won the race if he stayed on the high side. Instead he went to fill the gap up front and drove into the side of Harpell as well. This allowed Collins to pull ahead and Harpell managed to hang on for second. Jordan’s contact broke his own ride as he dropped several spots on the last lap. Matt Cole charged for third at the wire with Titus and Randy Fox rounding out the top five. Jordan ultimately ended up eighth, the same spot he started. Fox had started ninth for his top five finish. Rookie Blaine Klinger was impressive with his sixth place finish and last year’s “Rookie of the Year” Leo McGurrin was seventh. Tim Howell and Greg McCloskey rounded out the top ten.
Defending Street Stock Track Champion Doug Polhamus picked up where he left off with the victory in the 20 lap feature event. Polhamus took the lead on lap 1 and never looked back leading wire to wire. Defending Factory Stock Track Champion Eric Beach rallied from a lap one caution and charged from the back for the runner-up finish. Ray Lindquist had a great run to finish third after starting in tenth place. Doug Stack, Jr. and Tyler Yeagle rounded out the very competitive top five.
The Xcel 600 Modified division made their weekly return to the speedway on Saturday and it was Bailey Boyd dominating the action. Boyd took the lead on lap two from race leader Damon Henry and led the balance of the 20 lap feature. Korey Inglin finished second and was able to close the gap over the final laps but not able to make a serious challenge for the win. Will Eastman, Hunter Diehl and Kevin VanValenburg rounded out the top five.
Veteran racer Charlie Gilbert returned to the weekly racing wars in the Factory Stock division on Saturday. Gilbert showed that he still knows how to get around the quarter mile by winning the 15 lap feature event. Gilbert took the lead from Gregg Turner on lap 4 and led the balance. Turner ended up second with Cyrus Homer, Charlie Towner and Kevin McDonald completing the top five.
Defending Lightning Cat Expert Track Champion Nick Kennedy made it three in a row on Saturday in a wild three wide finish for the win. Jimmy DiFulvio took the lead from Kennedy on lap 8 and looked to be on his way for the win when the car slowed exiting turn four on the final lap. This allowed both Kennedy and a hard charging Bob Kress to ultimately split DiFulvio at the finish line. Kennedy had just enough to edge out DiFulvio for the win with Kress finishing third. The three were only separated by a foot at the finish. Jake Maynard rebounded from a lap 1 caution to finish third with Dave Simms taking fifth after starting eighth.
Ivan Cuerra raced to his first ever Five Mile Point Speedway in the Lightning Cat Novice division feature. Cuerra took the lead from “Downtown Cory Brown” on lap 6 and led the rest of the 12 lap feature. Brown finished second with John Maynard, Mike Stark and Randy Lane finishing fifth.
COUNTER PONTS…Five Mile Point Speedway opened for the 68th consecutive year on Saturday with a huge field of race teams and large and enthusiastic crowd on hand…The foam blocks got a work out in multiple hard impacts in turns one and two on Saturday…Fortunately they did their job and all of the drivers walked away…A very scary moment for rookie Xcel 600 driver Chelsey Beebe as she went full throttle in to the turn 1 foam blocks in her qualifying event…Beebe was shaken but exited the car under her own power in what could have been a very bad incident without the foam blocks in place…Again the new clay surface held the text with the first full night of racing…The ultra-smooth and racy quarter mile oval provided multiple lanes of racing with zero tire wear again…Joey Colsten won the Modified feature event with nearly 100 laps of racing already on his tires…Brian Malcolm also raced from the rear of the field to seventh on tires that had similar laps on them with no wear…Dave VanBuren took advantage of his alternate position in the Modified division, started last and drove to a fourteenth place finish…Brian White returned to FMP after several Open Sportsman Track Championships…White looked good in his heat race qualifying for the re-draw…Unfortunately White scratched the car prior the feature with motor issues…

SATURDAY, JUNE 9th
BRIAN MALCOLM COLLECTS FIRST MODIFIED FEATURE WIN OF 2018 AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY. ALEX YANKOWSKI BECOMES A REPEAT WINNER IN THE CRATE SPORTSMAN.
KIRKWOOD, NY…Brian Malcolm returned to Modified victory lane at Five Mile Point Speedway on Saturday for the first time in several years. His victory came in dominating fashion as he led 27 of the 30 laps in the main event. Alex Yankowski returned to victory lane for the second time this season after a late race pass of Brad Cicio in the Crate Sportsman 20 lap feature event.
During the off-season it was well documented that a number of new and former Modified teams made plans to compete weekly at Five Mile Point Speedway. Those drivers have had a huge early season impact on the action at the quarter mile. Joey Colsten has recorded to back to back point season Modified wins after only racing part time at FMP in 2017. On Saturday he entered the night as the point leader. Rusty Smith another driver that has made Five Mile Point Speedway his weekly home entered the evening second in the point rankings. Brian White returned to the speedway as a first year Modified chauffeur on the quarter mile and picked up the win on June 2ndand this past Saturday it was Brian Malcolm’s turn. Malcolm returned to weekly competition this season and promptly put the 119 in victory lane.
The shakeup in the Modified ranks has been enormous thus far in 2018 and on Saturday many of the heavy hitters were starting in the front half of the field for the 30 lap Modified feature. Travis Smith and Barry White led the field to the green with White getting the advantage at the start. Two early cautions slowed the action with the first coming on lap 2. Tyler Siri got together with Travis Smith and Smith spun in front of the field in turn 4. Fortunately, everyone escaped contact in what could have been a major early race pileup. When racing resumed it was short lived as a viscous wreck occurred on the backstretch triggered when Glenn Knapp bounced off the wall exiting turn 2. As Knapp bounced off the wall the car came across the speedway collecting Dan Allen and sending him flipping over top of Siri. Dan Solomon and Kevin Smith were also involved. The field went under red flag conditions and fortunately Allen emerged uninjured from the melee.
When racing continued White held the point but Malcolm made his move from the fifth starting slot to take the point lead on lap 4. White had a huge push in his car in turn 1 and lost several spots as P.J. Goodwin and Mike Colsten raced to the inside. Colsten had started sixth and looked fast from the start. Nick Rochinski ran in the fourth spot from his eighth starting slot and Barry White held on to fifth during the first quarter of the race. With several laps of green flag racing Malcolm quickly expanded his race lead over Goodwin as numerous two and three wide battles occurred throughout the field. Brian White, Rusty Smith and Shaun Walker were also making their moves forward from their ninth, tenth and eleventh place starting spots.
On lap 12 the caution flew as Walker was spun in turn one temporarily derailing his strong run. Walker made it known he was unhappy with Brian Weaver who had apparently lost his brakes initiating the contact with Walker. Weaver headed pit side to address the issue but did not return to action. During this same caution Mike Colsten headed pit side as did Kevin Bates. Both returned prior to the restart.
Malcolm set a torrid pace when racing resumed to green flag action as Goodwin held the second slot as now Rochinski and Smith battled tooth and nail for third place. Malcolm checked out from the field as battles took place all over the quarter mile and Walker began his charge after restarting at the back of the field. On lap 19 the final caution of the race flew as Bates slowed and Brian Puckett headed to the infield with a blown motor. On the restart Malcolm wasted no time pulling away again as Smith was now challenging Goodwin for second place. The final circuits for Malcolm were uncontested as the race for second place was intense. At the finish Malcolm crossed the line almost a straightaway ahead of the field. Goodwin held off Smith for second. Rochinski finished in fourth with Brian White taking fifth place. Donnie Elliott grabbed sixth with Walker rallying to seventh at the stripe. Travis Smith, Barry White and Alan Kellogg completed the top ten.
The 20 lap Crate Sportsman feature event was a thriller as the teams raced caution free for the first half of the race then went wild for the second half. Brad Cicio immediately took the race lead from Tom Hampton at the start of the feature event. Cicio looked strong as he opened up a quick early advantage over Hampton. Hampton battled with Tim Howell and rookie Tyler Peet during the early stages as they had a great race up front. Multi-time winner Tommy Collins, Jr. began to pick his way from his ninth starting slot as Alex Yankowski was following him up from the tenth slot. Tanner Harpell entered the night as the point leader but started deep in the field in eighteenth. On lap 10 the first caution of the race flew as Todd Titus made contact with Randy Fox sending him spinning in turn one and collecting Matt Cole in the process.
At this point Cicio looked dominant as Howell ran in second and both Collins and Yankowski had advanced all the way to third and fourth respectively. Peet maintained his great run in fifth. Cicio maintained his race lead as a number of cautions slowed the pace during the second half of the race. On lap 14 the caution flew as last weeks winner Leo McGurrin and Pat Jordan tangled and slammed the wall exiting turn 2. Both were eliminated from competition. On the restart Yankowski swung past both Collins and Howell to take over the second slot as the caution flew again a lap later. When racing resumed Cicio held his lead but Yankowski quickly pounced as they duo ran in turns three and four. Yankowski caught Cicio by surprise as he made contact with the race leader and took over the point. The final caution of the race flew on the next lap for Joe Guastella as Yankowski was penalized one position for the prior contact. This put Cicio back on the point for the restart. Cicio led the next two circuits but Yankowski drove underneath to take the race lead with only two laps remaining. Yankowski went on for his second win of the season at FMP. Cicio wound up second over Howell, Collins and Peet. Hampton had a solid run for sixth with Kyle Pierce, Connor King, Harpell and Blaine Klinger completing the top ten.
Ray Lindquist raced to his first ever Five Mile Point Speedway victory in the 20 lap Street Stock feature event on Saturday. Lindquist took the lead from last weeks winner Tyler Yeagle and led the second half of the race on his way to the first FMP win. Yeagle wound up second with Doug Polhamus, Steve Polhamus and Keith Beach rounding out the top five. The race was slowed by only one caution flag period.
Bailey Boyd took the lead form Damon Henry with only two laps remaining to record back to back wins in the Xcel 600 Modified main event. Boyd started twelfth on the field at the start of the 20 lap feature event. Henry finished second with Kevin VanValkenburg advancing from eighth to third at the finish. Rich Christman and Geoff Sutton rounded out the top five.
Jake Maynard was the Lightning Cat Expert feature winner on Saturday for his first of the season. Joshua Wilder led the first 14 circuits only to blow a motor on the final lap while leading. Maynard bested Nick Kennedy, Bob Kress, Adam Gilbert and Kenny Underwood at the finish.
Charlie Towner took top honors in the Factory Stock 15 lap feature event on Saturday. Towner was followed across the line by Charlie Gilbert, Alan Komar, Ryan Brockner and Bradley Marvin. Randy Lane was the winner of the Lightning Cat Novice 12 lap feature event and Kaden Ayre was the first ever winner of the Xcel Junior Modifieds on the inner loop.
This Saturday Five Mile Point Speedway will host an open practice at 5 p.m. On Sunday things heat up with the return of the Sunday Summer Slam and the Dick Longstreet Memorial for Modifieds. That 41 lap special event will pay an impressive $4,100 to win. Racing on Sunday begins at 6 p.m.
COUNTER POINTS…Once again over 120 race teams filled the Five Mile Point Speedway pit area for the Kirkwood/Binghamton Community Night…Another large crowd witnessed a great night of action as again the quarter mile oval surface was in outstanding shape…Brian Malcolm behind the wheel of a Troyer Modified commented about the racing conditions in victory lane, “The track is awesome, I could put the car anywhere I wanted to and we have had no tire wear at all this season.” Travis Smith rebounded from his early race spin in the Modified main for his best FMP finish in eighth as the youth movement continues in the class…Rookie Tyler Peet continues to impress in the Crate Sportsman division with a quiet fifth place finish as the lead rookie Alex Yankowski collected win number two…The loudest victory lane ovation of the evening came for youngster Kaden Ayre who won the first ever Xcel Junior Modified inner loop feature race…

SATURDAY, JUNE 30TH
TYLER SIRI NOW A TWO-TIME WINNER OF THE HEATH MEMORIAL WITH MODIFIED WIN IN 54TH EDITION OF THE EVENT AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY ON SATURDAY.
KIRKWOOD, NY…Tyler Siri became a two-time winner of the Heath Memorial on Saturday at Five Mile Point Speedway. The Modified victory in the 54thrunning of the event was worth $2,000. Joe Guastella led all 20 laps in the Crate Sportsman feature event on the way to collecting his first ever win.
Twenty-three Modified teams took the green for the start of the 30 lap Heath Memorial on Saturday. A pair of second year Five Mile Point Speedway Modified drivers led the field down for the green. Dan Solomon and Aleia Geisler set the pace for the start with Solomon taking command early. Lap 2 was eventful as three cautions occurred on the same circuit. Fortunately, the race then went caution free until lap 13. Only Brian White was sidelined from the three early race cautions.
When things settled down on lap 3 Solomon continued to set the pace as Tyler Siri began his charge from sixth starting spot and moved in to the runner-up slot. On lap 5 Siri made a bid on Solomon as the two ran side by side for the full circuit. Siri made the pass stick on lap 6. Solomon continued to run in second at this point with Glenn Knapp, Mike Colsten and Brian Puckett in tow. Colsten had started eighth and was using the high side of the quarter mile to advance. At this point Brian Malcolm had already progressed up to seventh from his twelfth starting slot and Brian Weaver was eighth after starting in fourteenth. Rusty Smith entered the evening as the point leader and started fourteenth. He too was using the extreme outside of the quarter mile in his march forward.
As the race approached the halfway mark Siri had opened up a sizeable lead with Solomon continuing his strong drive as Mike Colsten and he battled lap after lap. Knapp was running in fourth with Malcolm now up to fifth at the midway point of the race. The caution flew again on lap 24 with Colsten now up to second Malcolm, Nick Rochinski and Solomon making up the top five. On the restart Siri was able to pull away again as Colsten and Malcolm engaged in a great race for second place. On lap 26 Malcolm had secured second place and tried to chase down Siri for the race lead. A potential battle for the win never came as Siri mastered the quarter mile over the final laps.
At the finish it was Siri capturing his second Heath Memorial victory and first of the season at the speedway. Malcolm backed up his June 9thvictory with his solid second place finish. Rochinski had another solid run from tenth to third place at the stripe. Weaver rallied four fourth with Colsten fading to fifth late. Knapp, Brian Puckett, Rusty Smith, Shaun Walker and Donnie Elliott rounded out the top ten.
Joe Guastella led from wire to wire in the 20 lap Crate Sportsman feature event on Saturday. For Guastella it was his first victory at the speedway. Twenty teams took the green of the 20 lap feature event and the race was slowed by only two cautions, both coming on lap 2. Multi-time winner Alex Yankowski put on a show as he sliced through the field from his 19thstarting slot. Yankowski pulled this off despite the lack of yellow flag restarts to catch the field. Yankowski worked past Todd Titus on lap 17 but Guastella had opened up a straightaway lead as he ran a flawless race. The final three laps did get interesting as Guastella appeared to change his race line as he approached his first win. This did allow Yankowski do chase him down but not seriously challenge on the last lap. Guastella was an emotional winner in victory lane. Yankowski was followed by Titus, who had a solid run for third. Kyle Pierce and Tom Collins Jr. completed the top five finishers.
Defending Street Stock Track Champion Doug Polhamus led wire to wire to win the 20 lap Street Stock feature event. The race was caution free. Ray Lindquist entered the night as the point leader and finished second. Tyler Yeagle, Shane Wolf and Steve Polhamus completed the top five.
Bailey Boyd continued his tear in the Xcel 600 Modified division by winning the 20 lap feature event on Saturday. Boyd took the lead on lap 9 from his dad Eric Boyd on his way to the win. Bailey was followed at the finish by Eric Boyd and Mike Wilcha. For Wilcha this was another strong run toward the front. Damon Henry and Tyler Bartik rounded out the top five. The race was slowed by only one caution.
Tucker Harpell won his third Heath Memorial and second in the Lightning Cat Expert division on Saturday. Harpell started fourth and took the lead on lap leading all 15 circuits on the way to the victory. Nick Kennedy, Bob Kress, Dave Simms and Jake Maynard completed the top five.
Charlie Gilbert was the Factory Stock race winner on Saturday after taking the lead from Andy Brigham early on in the 20 lapper. Fifteen teams were on hand for the division as it continues to grow weekly. Ryan Brockner, the 2016 Track Champion finished second with Steve Simpson, Andy Brigham and Gregg Turner completing the top five.
The Lightning Cat Novice feature was won by Walter Decker and Kaden Ayre was a repeat winner in the Xcel Junior Modified feature.
COUNTER POINTS…As part of the tradition of the annual running of the Heath Memorial the Former Racer’s Reunion was held on Saturday…Dozens of former stars from the past returned on Saturday to be part of the big night…The Beagell Brothers – Don, Gary and Roger were presented with one of the “retired billboards” that line turn 3 at the speedway…The Glenn Knapp family was also honored with of those honorary boards to commemorate their years of dedication to the speedway…Once again the speedway was in outstanding condition despite temperatures in the low 90’s….The track had plenty of bite with no tire wear once again…

SATURDAY, JULY 7TH
RUSTY SMITH RECORDS FIRST EVER FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY MODIFIED WIN AND RETAKES THE CHAMPIONSHIP POINT LEAD.
KIRKWOOD, NY…For the majority of the 2018 Modified season at Five Mile Point Speedway Rusty Smith has had a least a share of the point championship lead despite never winning at the historic quarter mile oval. On Saturday he entered the night tied for the point lead with Brian Malcolm. Both of those things changed with Smith winning in dominating fashion on Saturday to leave him in solo possession of the point lead entering this Sunday’s Summer Slam event.
For the second consecutive week Aleia Geisler and Dan Solomon set the pace for the start of the 30 lap Modified feature event. Like the week prior it was Solomon darting out to the race lead. Things went off the rails quickly on lap one as the teams exited turn two three wide. Two cars got hooked sending several teams scattering. Nick Rochinski ultimately ended upside down along the backstretch wall entering turn 3. Remarkably, after careful handling by the track safety crew the Rochinski car was taken pit side only to return to action without losing a lap. The incident ended the nights for Brian Weaver and Glenn Knapp with P.J. Goodwin sent to the pits by track officials for the balance of the evening.
Several early race cautions slowed the pace but was not slowing the effort of Rochinski who was trying to charge from the back of the field. Up front Solomon looked strong once again as he held the point now over Travis Smith. Rusty Smith moved in to the runner-up slot on lap 7 and quickly chased down Solomon for the race lead. Once Rusty Smith caught Solomon it would be several laps of great side by side racing before Solomon eventually relinquished the race lead. Once in the lead Smith quickly opened up his advantage.
As the race hit the halfway mark the top five consisted of Smith, Solomon, Travis Smith, Shaun Walker and Mike Colsten. On lap 20 Joe Krum spun bringing out the yellow. Walker pitted at the same time with a flat tire ending his strong run. On the restart Smith opened up his lead again as Solomon and Travis Smith both battled for what was their best Modified runs to this point. The caution flew for the final time on lap 26. Smith again pulled away as the battle for second intensified. With only two laps remaining Travis Smith worked past Solomon for second as Colsten now tried to rattle the young driver for third.
At the finish Rusty Smith collected his first ever FMP Modified victory by over half a straightaway over Travis Smith. Solomon held off Colsten for third with Brian Malcolm completing the top five. Rochinski did an outstanding job to take sixth at the finish after flipping on lap 1. Brian Puckett, Alan Kellogg, Joey Colsten and Joe Krum rounded out the top ten.
Devon Zona became another first time winner in the 20 lap Crate Sportsman feature event. Zona started outside Russell Benke and immediately took the race lead at the green and led wire to wire. Eventual second place finisher Randy Fox stayed close after a lap 4 restart but Zona eventually pulled away. During the late stages twelfth place starter Alex Yankowski applied heavy pressure to Fox for second allowing Zona to open up even a greater lead. When the checkers flew it was Zona, Fox, Yankowski, Blaine Klinger and Tommy Collins completing the top five. The race was slowed by only two cautions.
Tyler Yeagle raced to his second victory of the season in the 20 lap Street Stock feature event. Yeagle took advantage of his pole starting position to led the entire distance. Ray Lindquist finished second with last weeks winner Doug Polhamus third, Eric Beach fourth and Buck Mills Sr. completing the top five. The race was slowed by only one caution as the teams have now gone 40 feature laps over two weeks with only one yellow flag.
Another first- time winner graced victory lane on Saturday in the Xcel 600 Modified feature event. Damon Henry started sixth and led all but one lap on the way to his first ever victory. A wild scramble on lap one saw outside front row polesitter Dakota Anderson out of action after hitting the backstretch wall as a result of a five wide attempt in turns one and two by the field. For Henry, the victory certainly did not come easy. Multi-time feature winner Bailey Boyd chased him down from lap 2 to the finish but was unable to work past Henry. Several caution flag periods slowed the pace. At the finish it was Henry grabbing win number one. Boyd came from twelfth to finish second. Eric Boyd finished third with Tyler Bartik charging to fourth after restarting at the rear of the field on lap 5 after being spun. Rich Christman had another solid drive for fifth.
Tucker Harpell recorded back to back wins in the Lightning Cat Expert 15 lap feature event on Saturday. Harpell too the lead on lap 9 from Josh Wilder and went on for the victory. Wilder saw his bad luck continue as he blew his motor while running second, his third lost motor of the season. Jimmy DiFulvio raced to second at the stripe with Nick Kennedy, Ken Underwood and Jake Maynard completing the top five.
The 15 lap Factory Stock feature win went to Gregg Turner. For Turner, it was his second feature win of the season. Tom Groover made several late race bids but Turner had enough to score the victory. Groover finished second with Sheldon Whitman having a great run for third. Charlie Gilbert and Justin Slezak completed the top five.
Yet another first - time winner took place in the Lightning Cat Novice feature. Cory “Downtown” Brown earned his first ever victory in the 12 lap feature.
Racing continues this Sunday at Five Mile Point Speedway with round three of the Sunday Summer Slam program. Anthony Perrego is currently two for two in the Shakelton NAPA Auto & Truck Parts Modified portion of the Summer Slam program. Racing on Sunday begins at 6 p.m.
COUNTER POINTS…It was certainly another action packed night of racing at the quarter mile oval as again car counts were strong despite the season hitting the mid-way point…Rusty Smith’s victory was very meaningful to the Smith family…Smith’s grandfather was one of the original “50 Greatest Driver’s of All-Time” at the speedway as announced in 2000…Rusty came up one lap short of a victory last season only to be sidelined on the final lap…Nick Rochinski received a standing ovation when by the crowd when he returned to the speedway after flipping on lap 1 in the Modified main…Rochinski charged back to sixth at the finish…In an ironic twist two first-time winners Devon Zona and Cory Brown both recorded their wins in front of the hometown crowd…Saturday was Montrose Community Night and both came up big in front of their local friends and family…Gregg Turner came up big in front of his large family gathering…The Turner Family came in from all over the country for a 75thsurprise party for Pete Turner (Gregg’s dad)…Damon Henry’s first win was certainly emotional for him as he has chased Bailey Boyd for a good part of the season…On Saturday he was the one being chased at the stripe…$500 in randomly drawn bonuses were posted among the divisions by an anonymous fan on Saturday evening…

QUICK NOTES…Track officials and the race teams did an outstanding job to complete as much of the race program as possible. Teams were ready for their events and no victory lanes were conducted in attempt to complete the entire racing program on Saturday as rain was literally all around the speedway the entire evening. The Modified main event will be finished on Saturday, August 11th along with a full program of racing. The extra racing program with the “Little Mike’s Race to Win” and added Xcel Modified Tour race makes July 28th too busy of a schedule to finish on that evening. Andy Brigham recorded his first ever Factory Stock win. Tyler Yeagle recorded the Street Stock win seven years to the date of his first ever win at FMP. Aubrey Ayre was a first time winner in the Junior Xcel Modifieds and her dad John Ayre was the Xcel Modified 600 winner. Jake Maynard recorded the win in the Cat Experts with Walter Decker taking win number 3 in the Novice.
SATURDAY, JULY 28th
DONNIE ELLIOTT WINS CAUTION FREE MODIFIED FEATURE EVENT AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY ON SATURDAY. "LITTLE MIKE'S RACE TO WIN" GOES TO JAMES CORNELL.
KIRKWOOD, NY…Donnie Elliott recorded his first Modified victory of the season on Saturday at Five Mile Point Speedway. The 30 lap feature event went caution free. James Cornell was the winner of the annual “Little Mike’s Race to Win” race worth $1,000 and honoring the memory of former Track Champion Mike Stolarcyk, III. Over 130 race teams once again jammed the Five Mile Point Speedway pit area on Saturday.
Elliott and Glenn Knapp led the Modified starting field to the green flag for the start of the 30 lap feature event. The start proved to be important as Elliott got the advantage immediately. Elliott ultimately led all 30 laps wire to wire in the caution free event but a late race challenge from Shuan Walker and tricky lapped traffic certainly made the final laps exciting.
During the early stages of the Modified main Elliott opened up his lead quickly. Walker wasted no time as he advanced from fourth to second in the first two laps. Brian Weaver also followed his lead as he moved from fifth to third on the first two laps. A number of terrific battles took place throughout the field as the racy and wide quarter mile surface provided for excellent racing action.
With the race going caution free Elliott first approached lapped traffic on lap 16 as he worked past David Doig, Jr. Both Elliott and Walker were glued to the bottom of the speedway as it was another five laps before the leaders caught Brad Shaffer. Once Elliott worked to the inside of Shaffer and moved past he again opened his advantage. Shaffer was fast on the top as Walker struggled to clear him in the pursuit of Elliott. It took Walker until lap 28 to make his way past Shaffer and he immediately locked in on the race leader Elliott. On the final two laps Walker pulled within striking distance but ran out of time as Elliott collected win number one on the season. For Walker, the second place finish was his best of the season with Weaver taking third at the stripe. Two-time winner Joey Colsten finished fourth with Nick Rochinski advancing from eighth to fifth at the finish. The point lead battle between Rusty Smith and Brian Malcolm was won by Malcolm on this night. Malcolm finished seventh with Smith settling for eleventh at the finish.
The annual “Little Mike’s Race to Win” for UMP/IMCA style Modifieds is always a very special event at the speedway. The race honors former Track Champion Mike Stolarcyk, III who passed away nine years ago. James Cornell brought out his Chuck Akulis paint scheme “Pink Panther” body for this special event. The throwback paint scheme brought back a lot of memories for race fans in what is already an emotion filled race each year. On the track Cornell took the lead on lap 1 from his fourth starting slot and led every lap. Much like the Modified race a late race charge by second place runner Jake Maynard proved to be exciting during the final two laps. Maynard closed the gap over the final laps but was not able to make a serious bid for the win. For Cornell the victory was worth $1,000 and very emotional. This is a race that everyone wants to win. In addition to the emotion of the annual race for James Cornell it was even more meaningful as the victory was dedicated to his mom who is battling very serious health issues currently. The race was slowed by only one caution.
Tim Howell raced to his first Crate Sportsman victory of the season on Saturday. He held off Kyle Pierce over the final laps to record the win. Pierce finished second after starting sixth. Current point leader Alex Yankowski finished third after starting ninth. Matt Cole was doing “double duty” also racing in the “Little Mike’s Race to Win”. Cole collected fourth in this one. Rookie Tyler Peet had another strong drive for fifth place at the finish.
Ray Lindquist recorded his second Street Stock victory of the season. Richie Hitzler was the Xcel 600 Modified Tour race winner. Jimmy DiFulvio was the Lightning Cat Expert race winner with Steve Lunn winning the Novice feature. Tommy Groover was a first time winner in the Factory Stocks with Joshua Landers winning the Junior Xcel Modified race.
Five Mile Point Speedway is silent this Saturday, August 4th but roars back to action with double Modified features and a full racing program on Saturday, August 11th.
